The minutes immediately after the fire alarm has been raised are crucial in preventing a fire from growing and to ensure that the occupants of the building are evacuated quickly and efficiently. When the Fire Service arrive they will be dealing with the fire or rescuing people who may be trapped, so they cannot be expected to assist with the evacuation. In many companies and organisations designated members of staff will have additional duties and responsibilities in a fire situation, these staff are normally referred to as Fire Wardens or Fire Marshals. The number of staff designated for these duties will normally depend on the size and complexity of the workplace. It is normal for one Fire Warden (and a deputy) to be nominated per department or floor. |
