Fires in Care Homes often end in tragedy as the residents generally can’t move around quickly and are particularly vulnerable in an emergency. So it’s crucial for all Care Homes to have good fire safety procedures and regular training for staff.

Apart from being good business sense, ensuring that Care Homes are safe from fire is a legal requirement under The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Failing to comply with this legislation can result in heavy fines and imprisonment!

Fire Safety in Care Homes has been produced as 2 main modules which cover; the evacuation of residents, staff and visitors and the important subject of fire safety/prevention. We have also included an 'induction' module which is ideal for training new starters and temporary/casual staff.

The evacuation module covers the essential information necessary to instruct staff in the procedures that need to be followed if there is a fire or similar emergency in a care home. In this module the following subjects are covered:
Fire Evacuation Module

Everyone must understand the importance of activating the fire alarm as soon as they discover a fire and this  cannot be overstated. In this section we look at how the alarm can be set off manually by operating a fire alarm as well as the automatic system that protects the premises.

Making sure that the fire service arrive quickly will ensure that professional help is on hand as quickly as possible. This section covers the information that the fire service controller will require, as well as reinforcing the importance of making this call immediately.

The evacuation section begins by considering the major differences to evacuating a care home to most other premises where the occupants can generally leave unaided. We look at the steps that are necessary to ensure that residents are moved away from the fire zone, to a safe area on the same level.

Fire Safety Module
While it is important to ensure that staff are aware of the procedures to be followed 'in the event of fire' it is equally important that all staff have a good understanding of what causes a fire and how they can be prevented - the programme points out that this is everyone’s responsibility and offers practical fire safety advice about; How Fires Start, Electrical Equipment, Portable Heaters, Cleaning Materials, Kitchens, Waste, Arson and Smoking.

Induction Module
All staff regardless of their position or if they are permanent or temporary employees, must be trained in your fire safety procedures as soon as they take up their position. This short programme has been produced from the content found in module 1. The essential information in this section has been edited to approximately 10 minutes, so that your new starters can be shown this programme to give them some insight into the fire procedures as soon as they start working at your care home.
